The Grandslam #50 August/September 08

THE GRANDSLAM
SRC BRIDGE SECTION NEWSLETTER
August/Sept 08 ISSUE #50

This 50th issue is dedicated to the one we…cough … cough … love the most – our Partners

1. Message from the Convenor – Zain Moledina
After 4 grueling months, our team emerged with a clean-sweep in the 2008 Premier League by not dropping a single match. I can honestly say that every team member surpassed expectations and performed admirably under a lot of pressure. Congratulations to Prof Yu and his team!

As I mentioned in the last newsletter, there is a need to re-examine our section’s priorities, resource allocation and direction. Section members will be receiving a survey form in 2 weeks. Aside from answering all the questions, please do make an effort to fill in the comment box. Cheng Huat is heading this project and our committee will discuss and reply every suggestion.

2. Premier League – March 2nd to June 22nd http://premierbridgeleague.webs.com/
We did it!! After coming in 2nd last year to Singapore Island Country Club, we lifted the Kan Ming Kwong Trophy … and in style! We won every game in the 8 round robin matches and every team member significantly contributed to the victory.

SRC started strongly against one of the favourites – NUSS. We continued with comfortable victories until we clashed with SICC in the penultimate round. Winning that close match was basically the decider as we had, by then, amassed a very big lead. Even though the pressure was off, we took a
17-13 win over runners’-up Chinese Swimming Club in the final round. Overall we scored a total of 176 Victory Points out of a possible 200.
Our congratulation goes to Eric Luk and his committee for a well organised event.

The SRC team members are (l to r) Murli Vassanmal, Chris Wong, Carton Parker, Prof. Yu Chun Yee (Capt), Zain Moledina, Shamim Moledina (Vice Captain), B.K. Tham and (not in picture) Richard Lim,

4. Graduation Tournament - Making the Transition – July 1st
The time had come. The nerves were frayed. The wrinkled foreheads and anxious looks were obvious to all. One by one, the neophytes walked nervously towards the box and pulled out a card … no … half a card. The deed was done, their fate was sealed. The master who held the other half would lead his apprentice for his initiation into the greater bridge family. Have no fear. You are one of us now. From now on, we will all be your guide.

The Bridge Section held its first Graduation Tournament on 1st July. Eight novices were randomly matched with 8 experienced players. There were some snacks to ease the stress and, of course, a very loose interpretation of the bridge laws – basically, anything goes! The objective was to give the novices a taste of their first competition and welcome them to the regular bridge circuit.

1. C C Chen & Malti Bhatia 63.1% 2. Zhang Ping & Chum Chan Fai 56.0%
3= Chris Wong & Hilda Tay 54.8% 3= Yu Chun Yee & Lee Yuet Wah 54.8%

5. Siglap CC In-house Potluck Special – 13th July
This pleasant 5-table match with friends and a bring-a-Dish lunch was won by SRC’s Murli Vassanmal and Chew Ai Leng. Incidentally, Murli was also top with his chocolate cake which was sinfully delightful as well!

BROKEN BRIDG –JQK (jokes, quotes & krap)
10. It Does Not Add Up
Joe : I am not such a bad bridge player. I can count all the partners I ever had in just one hand.
Sam : You must be holding a calculator.

11. Airing Your Frustration
You can always tell when a partnership is in trouble. Little things start getting in your nerves. “Would you please stop that!! That breathing in and out. It’s so repetitious.”

12. Beating the Odds
Take care of your bridge partner; Make him feel important and smart. If you can do that, you will have a happy and wonderful partnership. Just like 1 out of 100 partnerships.

13. Bridge Under Troubled Waters
I have often wanted to drown my troubles, but I can never get my partner to go swimming.

14. Long Rocky Road
My partner and I have been partnering for 40 years … out of spite.

15. Falling Uphill
"Do you think my game is improving?"
Of course. You only go down 2 nowadays.

16. That Sinking Feeling
Taking advice from my bridge partner is like taking sailing lessons from the captain of the Titanic

17. Divine Intervention
I just learned Bridge and I play really bad. Fortunately, there are many understanding and kind people at my church who don't mind partnering me and accepting me for what I am ... a punishment from God.

18. Daffy-nit-shuns : Politeness
Politeness is not saying bad things about your partner until you are at least 50 metres away.

19. Unlucky for Some
Not everyone hates my Partner. Only those who have partnered him.

20. Losing Your Match
My Bridge partner ran off with my wife: and let me tell you, I really miss him.

21. Relatively Speaking
Bridge partners are like husbands -- they are fine as long as they are someone else's.

22. Putting into Perspective
The purpose of Bridge parties is to remind you that there are partners who are worse than yours.

23. Double Sided Tape
They have invented this skin patch that will immediately cure depression. I tested it out during my Bridge session and it worked perfectly. All you need to do is to peel away the backing and stick it across your partner's mouth.

24. Pain Without Gain
Playing Bridge with my partner is like moving a piano.

25. Problem Solving
What do you have when your partner is buried up to his neck in the sand? Not enough sand.

26. Brain Drain
My partner has a brain like Einstein’s --- dead since 1955.

27. Going Green
If my partner's IQ gets any lower, I will have to water him.

28. Ejaculated
I call my partner “sperm”. They both have 1 chance in three million of becoming a human being.

29. Gift of the Gab?
My Partner has a very sharp tongue. I am hoping he cuts his own throat with it.

30. Semi-Grey Matter
When my Bridge partner goes to a mind-reader, he gets half price.

31. S & M Bridge
I play bridge only to punish my partner.
